We must be up to the task and <strong>know how to accompany <\/strong>them and make this stage of their ageing as pleasant as possible for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2c1ffa81270fb5d12dfed7b12a991441\">To do this, it is important to know <strong>how and when to manage old age.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d5caf1c83d92ac3127c4c69bcbb37041\">When can I consider my dog as Senior?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6f8710e7d9101c23d73e70a3c78befa2\">This depends on the breed\/size of your dog. It is well known that small breeds tend to live longer than large breeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A large sized dog<\/strong> could be considered senior at 7-8 years (even 6 years in the case of giants).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A medium-sized dog<\/strong> at 9-10 years of age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A small dog<\/strong> would enter this stage at 11 years of age.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-784a59ea8d766fac66f4c0222fe85e46\">It is important to take this into account, among other things to adapt their diet, as the requirements at this age are very different and a proper <a href=\"https:\/\/lenda.net\/international\/dog\/senior-mobility\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/lenda.net\/international\/dog\/senior-mobility\/\">Senior diet<\/a> will help to prevent overweight and take care of, among other things, their bones and joints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/lenda.net\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/perro-adulto.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lenda.net\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/perro-adulto.png 900w, https:\/\/lenda.net\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/perro-adulto-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/lenda.net\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/perro-adulto-768x256.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-86755e7b06bc6295899176b7b268815b\">What can be expected at this point?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-34d85b7695ca187beb94310af41acdc1\"><strong>1- Gradual deafness and\/or blindness are common:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-386ebec5a207be43e5108b8d86547cd8\">We may notice that their visual or auditory acuity is being lost, often irreversibly. <strong>They will need more affection and love than ever<\/strong> and a stable environment to orientate themselves and not feel lost, i.e. their bed and food always in the same place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-73702d34c329e7f804b342f5f93e3d22\"><strong>2- Changes in skin and hair:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2bcf90b155968bd52e1cdbcf935cb114\">The coat starts to turn white and calluses and\/or warts appear, as well as lesions on the pads. Various types of <strong>nodules or cysts <\/strong>may also appear. It is important to consult your Veterinarian for any appearance of skin lesions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b15d60a57f1646b1236a53850e4192ae\"><strong>3- Increased sleepiness and tiredness:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-66c859c92cd49e7c0d1213ffd5f17bf6\">It is important to respect his time, let him rest when he needs to and, if he asks for it, reduce the number of walks, especially the distance, rather than the frequency or duration. In fact, he will need to go out as often or more often than before (as he may find it difficult to hold his urine) but these walks can be shorter or quieter if he needs them to be. He can go out for the same amount of time, but he may prefer to stop and lie down in the shade of a tree rather than walk for several kilometres. <strong>We must adapt to his new needs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-085f8d5e3b182e5086bd09a2b0dacdd9\"><strong>4- Appearance of tartar and dental problems:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-77ffe6019e3f4691925038acbd53bb50\">Especially in small breeds, we should consult with your Veterinarian, as a timely cleaning can often <strong>save teeth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-986439bdef9f501007859b8e7b60f588\"><strong>5- Weight gain:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b3a5a216053dff63b9c59c31f15a2322\">It is common for reduced walking and exercise to lead to weight gain, so it will often be necessary to <strong>adjust the diet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f2beb3481ef1be65180e72b7018d9515\"><strong>6- Bone and joint problems:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-764a55528c47d1f62d5070b23edeeed3\">Rare is the senior dog, especially large and giant breeds, that does not have problems of this type when they reach old age. Weight gain does not help, so when these problems appear it is important to<strong> look for a diet <\/strong>that is not only low in fat but also takes care of bones and joints to mitigate the frequent dysplasia, arthritis or osteoarthrosis, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/lenda.net\/international\/vet\/dog-vet\/mobility-joints-dog\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/lenda.net\/international\/vet\/dog-vet\/mobility-joints-dog\/\">Lenda Vet Mobility &amp; Joints<\/a>, which with a large amount of chondroprotectors, collagen and natural anti-inflammatory, strengthens the joints and relieves discomfort, <strong>improving their quality of life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-42ec555830490158ed83e23c2da416cd\"><strong>7- Urinary problems:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-67f71b1a255d9aa9f27dd95e8aec694b\">The appearance of incontinence is also to be expected at this age. Once ruled out (or treated if this is the case), it is important to bear in mind that it is intrinsic to their age that it is difficult for them to hold their urine, so, as we said, we must offer them more outings, even if they are brief, and of course support, understanding and never scold them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Care and support for ageing dogs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cde25bc81d7d0de24df2e376d32dde75\">At this stage, more than ever, they will need an extra dose of <strong>cuddles and affection<\/strong>. They will demand it, often becoming more dependent and cuddly, but also calmer and more stable.
