These inactive enzymes are then dumped into the intestine during the digestive process, where they are activated in order to break down food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5843007078de77cad2a60556e9f426a9\">Two main diseases affect the pancreas: <strong>acute\/chronic pancreatitis<\/strong> and <strong>exocrine pancreatic insufficiency<\/strong> (EPI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c99e7dc4fc3b733a4ccc2877164b9422\"><strong>Pancreatitis<\/strong> occurs when instead of being activated in the intestine, these enzymes are activated in the pancreas itself, resulting in &#8220;self-digestion&#8221;, inflammation and subsequent organ failure. It can be acute or chronic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1acc137f17ec4c513b1bfe329c1c9e81\">The reason for the inflammation is usually unknown, one of the most frequent being probably the consumption of an excessively fatty diet, but there may be other causes such as medication or other substances, infections, trauma or endocrine problems among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0bbc426699c7f5905ea910c6db6f3823\">It is more common in small and medium-sized breeds, with miniature Schnauzer, Yorkshire or Terriers, dogs over 5 years old and of course obese animals being particularly predisposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cd18b2443bf450cd848ab7d544babb86\">In acute pancreatitis, or chronic pancreatitis re-aggravation peaks, we usually find the sudden appearance of some of the following symptoms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fever<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhoea and yellowish vomiting<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abdominal pain<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of appetite and anorexia<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apathy, depression and lethargy<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dehydration<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14319aa1ef5855f8802ad9d88b93643d\">Initial priority is to stabilise the patient, often requiring <strong>fasting<\/strong>, intravenous fluid therapy and analgesia.
